The Edge Effect is a term used in conservation biology where you alter environmental & biological conditions at the edge of a fragmented habitat.  Thus the habitat is affected from the edge and the more fragmentation that takes place the more effect you will see because the fragments have more edge, center habitats are now closer to the edge, and populations living there get divided into smaller populations.
